In December 2024, 32-year-old Maltese surfski paddler Matthew Schembri journeyed to South Africa to take part in the renowned Cape Point Challenge, a demanding 54km race along the stunning South African coast. Held on December 14th, this event tested Matthew's skills and endurance against some of the world's top paddlers.

A Passion for Paddling

Matthew's surfski paddling journey began at age 14 in 2006. Since then, he has competed internationally, earning recognition in the water sports arena. His notable accomplishments include setting the record for crossing from Malta to Sicily with his friend Chris Camilleri and achieving the fastest time for paddling around Gozo in both a singles surfski and a double with Chris.

Preparation for the Challenge

To prepare for the Cape Point Challenge, Matthew concentrated on endurance paddling, aware that the strenuous 54km race would push his limits. The Round Gozo Challenge, a 36.5km race organized by the Surfski Shack in October, was a crucial preparatory step. Matthew experimented with various nutrition and hydration strategies to enhance his performance.

An Unforgettable Race Experience

Matthew's experience in the Cape Point Challenge was remarkable. Paddling along the South African coast, he was surrounded by seals, penguins, and breathtaking scenery. However, the race posed challenges, including a new obstacle—kelp. Despite these hurdles, he persevered and completed the race, holding great respect for all participants.

Reflecting on the experience, Matthew stated, "It was a surreal experience that definitely made me grow as a paddler. Even though it was a formidable challenge, the South African paddling community was fantastic and was there to help out with anything I needed. I hope to pass on the knowledge and experience to the young generation of talented paddlers back in Malta."

Results and Future Plans

Matthew placed 33rd out of 72 paddlers, finishing in 5:09:59. Satisfied with his performance, he looks forward to returning and improving his rank in future competitions. During his South African trip, Matthew also participated in the Seadog race on December 12th, securing 13th place out of 59 participants.

Matthew expressed gratitude towards the South African paddling community, particularly Dawid and Jasper Mocke and Ryan Louw, for their hospitality, assistance, and valuable race advice.

Looking forward, Matthew aims for the World Championships in Durban this October. He also plans to compete in the Naxos Cup and OC-Ostsee Cup with his Surfski Shack teammates.

Matthew Schembri's commitment to surfski paddling and his outstanding performance in the Cape Point Challenge inspire athletes and paddling enthusiasts globally.
